Monte San Michele, Strategic summit in Gorizia, Italy
Monte San Michele is a mountain on the Karst Plateau near Gorizia with four separate peaks reaching up to 275 meters high. The site offers views across the Isonzo valley and the surrounding landscape.
The mountain was the site of intense fighting during World War I between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces. In 1916 it witnessed one of the first gas attacks on the Italian Front.
The mountain served as a place where soldiers endured harsh conditions and created memories during wartime. Today, visitors walk through spaces that echo with stories of those who were stationed here.
The area can be explored on foot with access to various routes that differ in difficulty and terrain. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for changing weather conditions on the open plateau.
Beneath the surface lies an extensive network of tunnels and fortified chambers dug by forces on both sides during wartime. These underground structures reveal the depth of military engineering that shaped the mountain.
