Monte San Michele

Monte San Michele features four distinct peaks rising between 237 and 275 meters above sea level on the Karst Plateau, offering views of the Isonzo valley.

The mountain witnessed intense combat during World War I, including the first poison gas attack on the Italian Front in 1916, resulting in 2,700 Italian casualties.

Italian poet Giuseppe Ungaretti created numerous compositions for his collection 'Allegria di naufragi' while serving as a soldier on Monte San Michele.

Visitors can explore the open-air museum that includes preserved trenches, military tunnels, and a dedicated World War I exhibition near Cima Tre peak.

The mountain contains an extensive network of fortifications from World War I, including trenches, artillery positions, and underground passages built by Austro-Hungarian forces.
