Magazzini del sale, Historic salt warehouse palace in Dorsoduro, Venice, Italy.
Magazzini del Sale is a brick palace building that stretches along Fondamenta delle Zattere with nine large doorways topped by crescent-shaped windows facing the Giudecca Canal. The structure displays the robust features typical of warehouses from this period, designed to accommodate the storage of large quantities of goods.
Construction began in the early 1400s and the building became central to Venice's salt trade, located near the main docks where rafts transported goods. This position made it a crucial hub in the city's trading network and contributed significantly to Venice's prosperity.
The Emilio and Annabianca Vedova Foundation maintains an exhibition space within the building while preserving the original brick walls and wooden roof structure. These authentic materials remind visitors of the building's working past and its transformation into a place for art and culture.
The building is located in Dorsoduro and can be easily reached by public transportation, particularly from the ACTV stops at Salute and Spirito Santo stations. The waterfront location makes it easy to spot and offers good views from the Giudecca Canal.
A modern rail system runs along the roof structure and uses robotic shuttles to transport artworks between storage areas and exhibition spaces. This transport system is invisible from below but gives the building an additional dimension in managing art collections.
