Casa alle Zattere

Casa alle Zattere is a multifamily residential building along the Fondamenta delle Zattere waterfront with a distinctive tall stone facade featuring vertical openings and multiple windows. The L-shaped structure has two entrances and contains an internal courtyard garden visible from within the building.

The building was designed between 1958 and 1962 by architect Ignazio Gardella and replaced two deteriorating structures in the Dorsoduro neighborhood. This construction was part of the postwar renewal effort in the district and reflects mid-century approaches to urban development in Venice.

The building displays Venetian architectural features using colored stucco and Istrian stone, materials that have been used in the lagoon for centuries. These choices connect the modern structure to local traditions and give the waterfront a cohesive appearance.

The building follows the natural curve of the waterfront promenade, which affects how it appears from different angles. Note that this is a private residence and can only be viewed from outside along the public waterfront paths.

The asymmetrical facade was designed to follow the curved shoreline naturally rather than imposing a rigid rectangular form. This adaptation to the existing topography was a deliberate design choice that helped the building integrate smoothly into its surroundings.
