Monte Spineto

Monte Spineto is a mountain summit in the Province of Alessandria that rises 459 meters above sea level where the Borbera and Scrivia rivers converge. The peak overlooks the towns of Serravalle Scrivia and Stazzano, and a sanctuary built between 1629 and 1633 sits at the top.

In 1155 residents of Stazzano and Serravalle sought shelter on the mountain during Frederick Barbarossa's invasion and built a chapel in gratitude. The sanctuary later expanded into a larger religious center when it was rebuilt between 1629 and 1633.

The sanctuary reflects the deep religious faith of local communities who made pilgrimages here to honor their beliefs. The chapel and its surroundings remain a quiet place where visitors can sense the devotion that has been expressed over many generations.

The mountain is accessible by a winding road that begins at the Vignole-Arquata Scrivia highway exit near Stazzano and follows the SP143 route. The steep road requires careful driving, so plan your journey with attention to the challenging terrain.

On clear winter days the peak offers views across the Po Plain toward the Alps, revealing large sections of the Scrivia and Borbera valleys. This far-reaching view is rarely possible because fog and haze usually block the sight.
