The Diocesan Museum of Pozzuoli is a religious art museum housed in the former episcopal palace in the Rione Terra district of Pozzuoli, near Naples. Its rooms contain paintings, sculptures, and liturgical objects gathered from churches and chapels across the diocese.
The museum opened on May 20, 2016, on the initiative of Bishop Gennaro Pascarella, in a building that previously served as the diocesan seminary. Christianity took root in Pozzuoli at a very early stage, and several objects in the collection reflect that long continuity of faith.
Many of the objects on display come from local churches and chapels and were gathered here to keep them accessible to the public. Chalices, vestments, and crosses give a concrete sense of how religious ceremonies were conducted in the region over the centuries.
The museum is on Strada Duomo in the Rione Terra district, an area easy to explore on foot. It is worth checking opening days in advance, as this private museum sometimes has variable hours.
Before becoming a museum, the building served as a seminary where priests were trained, so the rooms carry a history of religious education as much as religious art. Looking closely at the architecture, visitors can still notice traces of that earlier function.
