Palazzo Bonacolsi, Medieval aristocratic palace in Piazza Sordello, Mantua, Italy
Palazzo Bonacolsi is a medieval aristocratic residence on Piazza Sordello in Mantua with Ghibelline battlements and pointed-arch windows across its upper level. The complex also includes a historic tower and displays typical defensive features of the period.
The Bonacolsi family started building the palace in the late 1300s but lost control in 1328 when Luigi Gonzaga took over the property. This change marked a major shift in who ruled the city.
The building served as a power base for different noble families who used its grand appearance to display their authority in the city. Visitors can still see how each family left its mark through different architectural choices and decorations.
The palace sits in the center of Mantua on Piazza Sordello and is easily reached on foot, near the Ducal Palace. Visitors should check opening times ahead of arrival since access varies throughout the week.
The complex includes a medieval tower known as the Tower of the Cage, which Pinamonte Bonacolsi purchased to expand his family's properties. This tower remains one of the defining features visitors notice when exploring the site.
