Forlì Municipal Art Gallery, Art museum and picture gallery in Forlì, Italy
Forlì Municipal Art Gallery is a picture gallery and art museum housed in the restored Musei di San Domenico complex in the center of Forlì. The collection of around three hundred paintings spans from medieval panels to twentieth-century works.
The collection took shape in the early nineteenth century, when artworks were seized from churches and monasteries in the region during the Napoleonic suppression of religious institutions. Those confiscated pieces formed the core of what the museum holds today.
The gallery holds works by artists from the Romagna region alongside names from across Italy, ranging from medieval panels to modern paintings. Moving through the rooms, you can follow how local painting styles shifted over the centuries.
The museum sits inside the San Domenico complex, within easy walking distance of central Forlì, and is fully accessible for wheelchair users. A bookstore and an archive building are also on site for those who want to explore further.
Among the works is an early sixteenth-century painting titled 'San Girolamo' by Baldassarre Carrari, a painter from Forlimpopoli who is now little known outside the region. His works are rarely seen outside Romagna, which makes this piece worth seeking out.
