Parco fluviale dell'Alcantara

The Alcantara River flows through volcanic landscapes, creating deep gorges and valleys across 1927 hectares of protected natural territory in eastern Sicily.

The park, established in 2001, preserves an ancient river system where the name Alcantara derives from the Arabic term Al-Quantarah used during medieval periods.

Local communities maintain agricultural traditions within the park boundaries, cultivating hazelnuts and olives in the fertile valley floors near the river.

Visitors can access multiple hiking trails, educational centers, and guided tours throughout the park, with the main entrance located in Francavilla di Sicilia.

The river has carved through volcanic basalt, forming columnar structures up to 30 meters high and creating distinctive geological formations along its course.
