Il Picciolo Etna Golf Resort, Golf resort and hotel on Mount Etna slopes in Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy
Il Picciolo Etna Golf Resort is an 18-hole golf course combined with a roughly 98-room hotel on the grounds of a restored farmhouse about 650 meters above sea level on Mount Etna's slopes. The complex features a wellness center with indoor pools and access to outdoor activities like mountain biking and hiking in the volcanic landscape.
The resort was established in 1989 as Sicily's first golf course on the grounds of a renovated noble farmhouse near Mount Etna. This opening brought golf to a region where it had not existed before.
The restaurant at the resort showcases Sicilian food traditions through seasonal dishes made with local ingredients from the Etna region. Meals reflect the agricultural practices and eating habits that have developed in communities around the volcano.
The site is best explored on foot, and sturdy shoes are recommended because of the volcanic ground. Visitors should bring plenty of water since the elevation and open fairways offer little shade.
The golf course incorporates natural volcanic stone formations into its design, allowing the course to blend with the surrounding terrain. Players see Mount Etna while playing and experience the distinctive geology of this mountain region firsthand.
