Etna Park

Mount Etna regional park spans 58,000 hectares across different elevations, featuring volcanic craters, lava fields, dense forests, and alpine meadows.

The establishment of the protected area in 1987 marked a turning point in safeguarding the geological formations and biodiversity around Europe's largest active volcano.

Local farmers maintain traditional agricultural practices within designated zones of the park, producing wine, hazelnuts, and other crops in the mineral-rich volcanic soil.

Four distinct zones regulate activities within the park, with zone A restricting human access to preserve natural habitats, while zones B, C, and D allow agriculture and tourism.

The park serves as a research center for studying volcanic phenomena, hosting rare plant species that have adapted to grow on different-aged lava flows.
