Santa Maria della Provvidenza

Santa Maria della Provvidenza is a church in Zafferana Etnea built with a white Syracuse stone facade. The interior is divided into three naves arranged in a Latin cross pattern, while the dome above features distinctive blue majolica tiles.

Construction began in 1731 under Don Francesco Gagliano, and the building sustained damage from earthquakes in 1818 and 1984. These seismic events prompted multiple reconstructions that shaped the current form of the structure.

The large painting by Raffaele Stramondo depicting Madonna della Provvidenza hangs above the main altar and shapes how visitors experience the interior. This artwork is central to the church's spiritual focus and reflects the local artistic heritage of the region.

The church is open to visitors and hosts regular religious services throughout the year. The Madonna della Provvidenza festival in August brings together pilgrims and local residents for the main celebration.

The blue majolica tiles on the dome are a characteristic feature of churches near Mount Etna and give the building a distinct regional identity. These decorative elements reflect the architectural traditions specific to this volcanic area.
