Riserva naturale orientata La Timpa, Regional nature reserve in Acireale, Italy.
Riserva naturale orientata La Timpa is a protected coastal area near Acireale on Sicily's eastern shore, made up of steep volcanic cliffs that drop directly down to the sea. The reserve contains walking paths, viewpoints along the cliff edge, and basalt rock formations including columns shaped by cooled lava flows.
The cliffs at La Timpa were formed by lava flows from Mount Etna that shaped this stretch of coastline over thousands of years. The area was declared a protected reserve in the late 20th century after forests and native vegetation had been greatly reduced by centuries of human use.
La Timpa is one of the few places on the eastern Sicilian coast where visitors can watch plants growing directly on steep lava cliffs above the sea. Birds nest on the rock faces here that are rarely seen elsewhere on this coastline, making a walk along the paths a very different experience from nearby beaches.
Sturdy shoes are recommended since paths can be rocky, uneven, and steep in places. The cooler months make walking more comfortable, as the summer heat along these south-facing cliffs can be intense.
At the base of the cliffs, mineral-rich springs flow out just above sea level, giving the water near the shore a color that is visibly different from the open sea. This is one of the rare spots along the Sicilian coast where volcanic groundwater reaches the surface so close to the waterline.
