Palazzo municipale, Municipal palace in Piazza del Duomo, Acireale, Italy
The Palazzo Municipale is a late 18th-century administrative building that defines Acireale's town center. Its facade displays around twenty balconies with wrought iron railings and decorative stone masks serving as supports.
The original building was founded in 1659, but the 1693 earthquake nearly destroyed it completely. Architect Costantino Larcidiacono reconstructed it between 1783 and 1785 with a new design.
The palace stands prominently on Piazza del Duomo and shapes how visitors experience the square today. Its role as the city's administrative center makes it a focal point where local life and governance meet.
The building sits directly on Piazza del Duomo and is easily visible and accessible from the street. Public areas are typically open to visitors on weekdays.
Inside the building is the Accademia di Scienze, Lettere e Belle Arti degli Zelanti e dei Dafnici, founded in 1833 and Sicily's oldest scholarly academy. The institution has made its home here and continues to shape the city's cultural life.
