Riserva naturale Lago di Vico, Regional nature reserve in Caprarola and Ronciglione, Italy.
The Riserva naturale Lago di Vico is a large nature reserve with woodlands, marshes, and a lake situated within a volcanic crater basin in the Lazio region. The site covers territory across two municipalities and contains multiple habitat types.
The reserve formed approximately 400,000 years ago from a volcanic collapse that created the present-day lake basin and surrounding mountain ridges. This geological event shaped the landscape that exists today.
The headquarters at Palazzo delle Scuderie Farnese presents nature documentaries and runs environmental education activities for the local community. Visitors can learn about the plants and animals that live here.
Visitors can walk on marked trails and observe wildlife from designated viewing points throughout the reserve. Audio guides in multiple languages help you understand what you see as you explore.
The great crested grebe was chosen as the symbol of this reserve and nests on the lake shores alongside many other water birds. This species is particularly characteristic of the waters here.
