Riserva naturale Valle dell'Aniene

Riserva naturale Valle dell'Aniene is a protected reserve spanning around 650 hectares along the Aniene River between Ponte Mammolo and Ponte Nomentano. The landscape includes forests, wetlands, and open areas that provide habitat for numerous bird species and wildlife.

The area has been inhabited since ancient times, as shown by archaeological excavations that uncovered remains of two Roman villas and prehistoric finds. These discoveries reveal that the region held importance for many centuries.

The Cervelletta complex features a fortified tower from the 12th century surrounded by farming buildings from later periods. These structures show how people lived and worked the land across different eras.

The visitor center Casa del Parco offers workshops, guided tours, and observation programs for different interests. Those exploring the area can find information there and join organized activities to learn more about the reserve.

Local residents cultivate vegetable gardens on about 4000 square meters (0.4 hectares) within the reserve as part of a community project. These urban gardens show how the local community plays an active role in caring for the area.
