Nature reserve Lake Serranella, Regional nature reserve in Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, Italy
Nature reserve Lake Serranella is a wetland area situated between the Adriatic coast and the Majella massif, covering several hundred hectares. Dense reed beds dominate the landscape at an elevation of roughly 90 meters above sea level.
The area was created in 1981 when a water barrier was built for irrigation, and it became a protected site under WWF management in 1987. This transformation made it an important habitat for migratory and water birds.
The reserve attracts bird watchers from across the region who come to spot rare species like black storks and spoonbills in their natural setting. The location has become an important gathering place for people interested in observing water birds and wetland wildlife.
Visitors should plan ahead since the visitor center requires advance reservations and mainly offers guided tours on weekends. Early morning is the best time for bird watching, when animal activity is at its highest.
The site contains the only known population of Laxmann cattail in Abruzzo, a rare plant listed in Italy's Red Book of endangered species. This botanical distinction makes the wetland an important research location for botanists studying threatened plant populations.
