Riserva naturale marina Isole Egadi

The Egadi Islands Marine Reserve is a large protected area off Sicily's northwestern coast, encompassing three main islands: Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo. It covers an extensive sea territory that protects important marine habitats and coastal ecosystems.

The reserve area contains archaeological remains from an ancient naval battle between Romans and Carthaginians that occurred northwest of Levanzo. This clash represents a pivotal moment in ancient Mediterranean history and left traces visible on the seabed.

Local fishing families still use traditional methods passed down through generations, which you can observe in the small harbors and villages. The seasonal rhythms of life on these islands reflect centuries of connection to the sea and its resources.

You can reach the reserve by ferry from Trapani, with many spots suitable for snorkeling and diving at various water depths. The warmer months offer the best conditions for water activities and clearer visibility underwater.

The reserve protects one of the Mediterranean's largest underwater seagrass meadows, which generates significant amounts of oxygen. These expansive underwater fields provide habitat for numerous marine creatures and often go unnoticed by visitors despite their crucial role in the ecosystem.
