Region I of the archaeological excavations of Pompeii, Archaeological excavation zone in Pompeii, Italy
Region I of the Pompeii excavations is a zone containing residential buildings, temples, and shops that show how Roman neighborhoods were organized. The structures include multi-story houses, small storefronts, and religious sanctuaries arranged closely together.
Excavation of this region began in the 1750s and uncovered different layers of objects from everyday life. These finds date from before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 that buried the city under ash.
The Temple of Apollo displays preserved wall paintings and architectural elements reflecting how Romans practiced their religion. These visual details help visitors understand how people worshipped their gods and arranged their sacred spaces.
Visitors can explore this region via marked pathways and information boards that explain the excavations. Good shoes are needed because the ancient walkways can be uneven, and sun protection is important during warm months.
The House of the Faun contains intricate floor mosaics depicting Alexander the Great at a famous victory. This artwork is among the finest examples of Roman mosaic craftsmanship and shows the skill applied in wealthier homes of that era.
