Rifugio 3A, Mountain hut in Dolomites, Italy
Rifugio 3A is a mountain hut in the Dolomites located at about 2500 meters along the Alta Via 1 hiking route. It provides overnight stays and meals for hikers making their way through the region on longer mountain journeys.
The hut was built in 1979 as part of the network of mountain shelters throughout the Dolomites. This development allowed hikers to tackle long routes like the Alta Via 1 over several days instead of one exhausting journey.
The hut serves regional mountain food that brings hikers together at a shared dining table each day. Local dishes like pasta, goulash, and polenta connect visitors through the tradition of alpine hospitality practiced here.
The hut operates from June through October and requires you to contact the staff ahead of time to secure a stay. The trails leading to it are steep and challenging, so good physical preparation makes the arrival much more manageable.
The hut collects snowmelt and rainwater in tanks, which becomes a precious resource during late summer months. This self-reliance for water shows how isolated and self-sufficient the shelter must be at this elevation.
