Rudiae

Rudiae is an excavation area southwest of Lecce with remains from different periods scattered across the grounds. The complex features residential buildings, workshops, and a large amphitheater enclosed by defensive stone walls.

The settlement was founded by the Messapians in the 8th century BCE and grew into an important center over the centuries. As the neighboring settlement Lupiae gained power, this site gradually lost importance and was eventually abandoned.

The site was a living center where craftspeople and merchants worked, as shown by pottery and tools scattered across the excavation area. These objects reveal how people supported themselves over many generations in this settlement.

The excavation site sits on open ground, so bring sun protection and sturdy shoes, especially in warm weather. It is helpful to check opening hours in advance, as access may be limited on certain days.

The amphitheater was only fully uncovered in 2011 during excavation work, revealing a massive structure that had remained hidden beneath the surface for centuries. Its size shows that this settlement held more importance than previously thought.
