Torre dell'Ovo

Torre dell'Ovo is a Renaissance tower that rises from a cliff above the Ionian Sea in Maruggio. It features a square base and stands as a sentinel overlooking the water below.

This tower was built in 1473 as part of the coastal defense network against raids from the sea. It worked in communication with nearby defensive towers to protect the shoreline.

The waters below hold memories of the traditional Mediterranean tuna fishing that once sustained the local community. This heritage continues to shape how residents and visitors understand their relationship with the sea.

The structure is currently closed to the public due to structural concerns that limit access. Visitors can still view it from outside and appreciate its position on the cliff overlooking the sea.

When the sea is calm, ancient stone blocks with Greek inscriptions sometimes become visible beneath the tower's foundation. These submerged remains suggest an even older history beneath the surface.
