Acquapendente Cathedral

Acquapendente Cathedral is a church with rounded arches and thick stone walls built in the Romanesque style of the Middle Ages. It has an underground crypt divided into nine smaller sections that extend beneath the main structure.

The church received its cathedral status in 1649 when the Diocese of Acquapendente was established. This change happened after nearby territories were incorporated into the town's jurisdiction.

The crypt displays carved stone capitals created by medieval craftsmen, revealing the skill and artistic taste of people who worked here centuries ago. These ornamental details show how much care went into decorating even the hidden parts of the church.

You can visit daily to attend services or explore on your own, with guided tours available if you prefer not to walk around alone. Both the main church area and the underground crypt are open to visitors.

The interior contains two carved reliefs showing biblical scenes: a holy figure with an angel and a saint battling a dragon. These artworks display the craftsmanship of Renaissance sculptors who worked on the church during that period.
