Apollonia, Archaeological site in San Fratello, Italy.
Apollonia is an ancient city on Mount San Fratello at roughly 718 meters elevation, where ruins of temples, public buildings, and homes remain visible on the hillside. The structures are arranged in a way that shows how people organized this place into distinct districts.
The city was founded in the early 300s BC by Dionysius of Syracuse as a strategic outpost protecting the region. Later conflicts led to its destruction and abandonment, marking the end of settlement here.
Pottery and coins found here show the strong trading connections this settlement maintained across the Mediterranean and its devotion to Apollo as a protective deity.
The site can be reached from the modern town of San Fratello located at the base of the mountain. Wear sturdy shoes since paths across the ground are uneven and some slopes are steep.
A large cistern was cut directly into the rocky ground to store water for the community. The limestone walls were built using isodomic masonry, a technique that required skilled stonework.
