LORAN-C transmitter Lampedusa, Radio navigation transmitter in Lampedusa, Italy.
The LORAN-C transmitter Lampedusa is a radio navigation station located on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. The facility featured a tall mast structure and broadcast low-frequency signals designed to help ships determine their exact location at sea.
The station served as a secondary transmitter for the Mediterranean maritime navigation network and operated for approximately two decades. It was decommissioned in 1995 as satellite-based navigation systems began to replace radio-based positioning methods.
Lieutenant Kay Hartzell made history in 1979 by becoming the first female commanding officer of an isolated United States military installation at this location.
The site is located on a remote island with direct Mediterranean exposure and remains relatively isolated. Access to the facility may be limited, so visitors should check local conditions before planning a visit.
During the 1980s, the facility became a target of military strikes, making it a symbol of the geopolitical tensions in the region. Despite these attacks, the transmitter remained structurally sound and continued to operate.
