The Museo dell'aviazione is the aviation museum of the Parco Tematico & Museo dell'Aviazione di Rimini, opened in 1995 on the first hills behind the city, beside the SS 72 road to San Marino. Its roughly 100,000 m² exhibition area, largely open-air, holds over 50 original aircraft plus anti-aircraft guns, armoured vehicles, engines, flight suits, uniforms, decorations and medals, making it the largest structure of its kind in Italy.
The museum opened in 1995 and preserves aircraft from major conflicts throughout the 20th century. Through this collection, visitors can trace how military aviation developed and influenced major world events.
The museum is part of a wider park that also holds the Historical Aeromodelling Museum, the Gothic Line Study Centre (on the Battle of Rimini) and the cultural association "Sulle Ali della Storia", which organises conferences and workshops on aviation history. Uniforms, flight suits, documents, decorations and medals are displayed alongside the aircraft.
Plan enough time for your visit since the collection is extensive and there is much to explore on the grounds. Wear comfortable shoes as you will walk through different areas to view all the aircraft.
The collection includes the cabin of an Antonov An-2, a Soviet-era biplane, and the cabin of a Mil Mi-2 helicopter, both displayed so visitors can step inside. The park also holds a Gothic Line study centre, since the SS 72 road towards San Marino crosses the hills where that defensive line ran.
