Neurasen Castle

Neurasen Castle is a medieval stone fortress ruin perched above the village of Rasen-Antholz, overlooking the Antholz valley and surrounding peaks. The site contains fragments of walls and building foundations spread across a hilltop, revealing the layout of its various structures.

The Lords of Rasen built this fortification during the 13th century to control the region. Ownership transferred to the Bishops of Brixen in 1342, who maintained it until it was eventually abandoned.

The ruins reflect building styles common to medieval fortifications in this region, showing how defense structures shaped settlement patterns below. Visitors can still see the layout that once protected communities in the valley.

The ruins are accessible via marked hiking trails starting from Oberrasen, requiring several hours of walking. Sturdy footwear is recommended due to steep terrain, and parking is available near the trail entrance.

The site sits at about 1,030 meters (3,380 feet) elevation in a location that commanded views of all movement through the Antholz valley. This height advantage was essential for monitoring the mountain passes and trade routes below.
