Unione di Comuni Valdarno e Valdisieve, Municipal union in Tuscany, Italy
The Unione di Comuni Valdarno e Valdisieve is an administrative association of six municipalities located in the valleys of the Sieve and Upper Valdarno, including Londa, Pelago, Pontassieve, Reggello, Rufina, and San Godenzo. The territory combines rural villages with forest landscapes spread across the eastern Tuscany region.
The union was established in 2010 as a merger of existing municipalities to better coordinate administrative functions and services across the region. This step was part of a broader effort to streamline local governance in central Italy.
The area contains churches, chapels, and traditional farmhouses scattered across the valleys that reflect local ways of life in Tuscany. These structures show how communities organized their settlements and sacred places over time.
The region is best explored by car or motorcycle, as the villages are distributed across rural roads and public transportation is limited. Allow extra time for travel between different municipalities if you want to visit several places in one day.
The area includes portions of Casentinesi Forest National Park and shelters the famous Benedictine forest of Vallombrosa, where monks have lived and worked for centuries. This heavily forested region with its high mountains offers a rare blend of spiritual heritage and natural landscapes.
