Orte Sotterranea, Underground archaeological complex in Orte, Italy.
Orte Sotterranea is an archaeological complex of caves, tunnels, and chambers carved beneath the medieval town. The network spans multiple levels and shows various functional areas including water systems, storage rooms, and living spaces.
The underground structures developed over thousands of years, beginning in the Bronze Age and expanding further during the Middle Ages. Originally carved as water storage and shelter, they later served many daily purposes for the residents.
The underground spaces show how residents organized their daily routines and what work they performed beneath the town. You can see traces of stables, weaving workshops, and water sources that reflect medieval and ancient life.
You enter the site from Piazza della Libertà and explore multiple interconnected levels that are well lit and marked. Solid footwear is recommended, as floors are uneven and there are stairs to climb.
The complex was not originally designed for a single purpose but grew from natural caves and fissures that people adapted over time. This created an organic maze without a fixed overall structure.
