Castello di Giove

Castello di Giove is a stone fortress perched atop a hill at 627 meters elevation, marking the boundary between former territories of Orvieto and Perugia. The structure includes a chapel and 16th-century cellars that run beneath the main building.

The Bulgarelli family constructed the fortress in 1191 on foundations of an ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter Elicius. The location at a boundary between two powerful city-states gave it strategic importance that lasted for centuries.

The chapel inside still features artwork reflecting the spiritual life of medieval times, and visitors can see how faith shaped daily existence here. The religious space reveals the devotion that characterized this corner of central Italy for centuries.

The castle offers guided tours where you can explore the historic cellars and sample local wines. It helps to book ahead, and the warmer months offer the best conditions for visiting the entire property.

The estate spans a large territory where truffles grow naturally in the soil, including two rare varieties that multiply on their own in woodland areas. These underground treasures remain hidden from visitors but have shaped the local economy for generations.
