Santa Maria Assunta

Santa Maria Assunta is a Romanesque church in Lugnano in Teverina with a limestone facade featuring a prominent rose window and a columned portico. The crypt beneath the presbytery is divided by Corinthian columns into smaller sections.

The building dates from the 11th and 12th centuries and replaced an earlier 8th-century church. Major construction work was completed around 1230.

The floor shows Cosmatesque patterns that create a visual path through different decorative designs. These geometric elements give the church its distinctive appearance and guide the eye through the interior spaces.

You can enter the crypt beneath the presbytery through side entrances to view how it is divided by columns. The interior allows for movement and viewing of the various architectural elements throughout the space.

The facade shows a stone eagle at its peak carrying a sacrificial lamb, and ceramic discs around the rose window depict the six days of creation. These uncommon decorative details are among the most striking features of the exterior.
