Lake Alviano, Protected wetland reservoir in Umbria, Italy

Lake Alviano extends across 900 hectares within the Tiber Valley, featuring shallow waters, reed beds, and riparian woodlands that support numerous bird species.

The creation of Lake Alviano occurred in 1963 when ENEL constructed a dam on the Tiber River to generate hydroelectric power for the region.

WWF Italy manages this natural reserve since 1990, establishing educational programs and research initiatives focused on wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

Two distinct walking paths traverse the reserve, with the 1.5-kilometer Sentiero Natura offering wheelchair accessibility and six observation hides for bird watching.

The reservoir contains a heron nesting colony on an island where grey herons and multiple other heron species establish their nests each breeding season.
