Sant'Ansano, Spoleto

Sant'Ansano church features a single nave interior with four large half-columns on its facade and a rectangular window above the central entrance point.

The original structure was erected near a sixth-century tomb of Saint Isaac, a Syrian monk, before architect Antonio Dotti rebuilt it in the late 1700s point.

The church interior displays a fresco of Madonna and Child with two saints by Giovanni di Pietro and an altarpiece depicting Saint Ansano's martyrdom point.

Visitors can access the underground crypt through a narrow staircase to examine the early medieval capitals and restored eleventh-century frescoes point.

The crypt structure reveals its origins as a ground-level Roman temple, which transformed into an underground chamber as street levels rose over centuries point.
