Palazzo Comunale

The Palazzo Comunale is the town hall of Spoleto, situated between the ancient forum and the cathedral square. The building features a tall tower from the thirteenth century and is marked by a facade decorated with coats of arms and carved inscriptions from the medieval period.

The foundation of the palace rests partially on a Roman dwelling uncovered during excavations in the 1885. The tall tower rising above the building dates to the thirteenth century and shows how medieval construction built directly upon ancient remains.

The building's northern facade displays coats of arms and inscriptions that speak to Spoleto's evolving power and governance through the centuries. Walking past these symbols, you can sense how much the city valued its identity and connection to the larger regions around it.

The building sits in the heart of Spoleto's old town and is easy to reach on foot when exploring the cathedral or forum area. You can view the exterior facade anytime, though the interior spaces are typically accessible only during specific occasions or guided visits.

The tower houses a double-faced sundial and contains bells, with one of them cast in the fourteenth century. This medieval bell is a rare survivor and serves as a direct link to the building's oldest period.
