Teatro Caio Melisso, Opera house in Piazza del Duomo, Spoleto, Italy.
Teatro Caio Melisso is an opera house located at Piazza del Duomo in Spoleto, featuring a horseshoe-shaped interior with three levels of box seating and a gallery above. The ceiling displays paintings of Apollo and the Muses, which add to the traditional elegance of the auditorium.
The building was founded in 1667 as Teatro di Piazza del Duomo and underwent various reconstructions over the following centuries. It received its current name in 1880 following a renovation directed by Giovanni Montiroli.
The venue serves as a gathering place for opera lovers during the annual festival and creates a special intimacy between performers and audience members in its intimate setting. This sense of closeness transforms how people experience performances compared to larger modern opera houses.
The theatre accommodates around 300 spectators distributed across three levels, offering good views from most seats. The best time to visit is during the summer festival season when regular opera performances take place.
The theatre curtain displays a grand painting titled Glory of Caio Melisso, created by artist Domenico Bruschi during the 19th century. This ornate artwork is one of the first things visitors notice upon entering the hall.
