Castello Visconteo

Castello Visconteo is a military museum and castle in Somma Lombardo featuring three distinct courtyards surrounded by fortified walls. Each section has independent entrances and defensive towers with spiral staircases.

The castle was originally built in the 13th century and expanded in 1448 when Francesco and Guido Visconti sought protection during conflicts with Milan's ruling forces. This transformation reflects the power struggles of the era.

The castle displays collections of Spanish weapons and armor from the 16th century housed within its halls. An ornithological museum section contains 360 preserved bird specimens.

The castle is typically accessible during warmer months with guided tours on weekends and holidays. Plan to check schedules in advance and allow time to explore the different sections and museum collections.

The main floor displays early 17th-century frescoes depicting mythological scenes that add artistic depth to the rooms. A chapel houses an oil painting attributed to the artist Cerano.
