Castle of Golaso

Castle of Golaso is a fortified residence in Varsi featuring two internal courtyards, a south-facing entrance wing, and a central chapel located in the western section. The compound encompasses various building sections and open areas that together form a substantial medieval complex.

The fortress underwent extensive rebuilding during the 16th and 17th centuries, transforming from a purely defensive installation into a country residence. This conversion was part of a wider trend across Italian estates during this period.

The castle served as the seat of the Rugarli counts and shows through its layout the transition from purely defensive stronghold to a noble residence. The building reflects the changes that reshaped the region over centuries.

Access is via Via Golaso with clear signage marking the route to the site. Visitors can explore the various building wings and courtyards up close to appreciate the full layout of the complex.

The building incorporates symbolic numerical symmetry with 12 staircases representing the months, 30 doors for the days, and 365 windows for each day of the year. This deliberate design reveals how the builder integrated mathematical principles into the architecture.
