Villa Recalcati, 18th century Baroque villa in Casbeno district, Varese, Italy
Villa Recalcati is an 18th-century Baroque residence in Varese featuring multiple rooms adorned with painted ceilings by regional artists. These frescoes depict mythological scenes and allegorical figures that reflect the artistic taste of its former owners.
Construction began in the early 1700s under Marquis Gabrio Recalcati and was significantly expanded between the 1750s and 1770s. In the late 1800s it transformed into a grand hotel, marking a shift from private residence to public accommodation.
The residence served as an upscale hotel and attracted wealthy visitors from across Europe who came to stay and socialize within its walls. The rooms reflect this glamorous hosting role, where comfort and refinement were paramount.
The building now houses provincial administrative offices and can be visited by prior arrangement, as parts remain in active use for government work. The restored grounds are often accessible for walking and offer pleasant outdoor space to explore.
The grounds once housed the actual heart of Polish hero Taddeusz Kosciuszko, now replaced by a commemorative copy housed in a decorative urn. This unusual relic speaks to the broader European importance the residence held during the 1800s.
