Madonna di Montecastello, Catholic shrine in Tignale, Italy.
Madonna di Montecastello is a sanctuary perched on a rocky outcrop above Lake Garda, featuring a white facade with ornate architectural details. The structure incorporates smaller buildings and commands views of the water and surrounding landscape.
The sanctuary was built upon the remains of an ancient temple that was later converted into a fortification. A smaller structure from the 8th century lies beneath the current building, documenting the long religious significance of this location.
The interior holds frescoes from the Giottesca school and displays one of Europe's largest collections of votive offerings behind the main altar, dating from the early 1600s. These artworks reflect personal prayers and gratitude left by visitors across generations.
Access is usually available on weekends and religious holidays, with limited hours during winter months. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing and bring sturdy footwear, as stairs and uneven surfaces lead to the sanctuary.
The sanctuary's name derives from an event in 1200 when a star appeared during a battle in Tignale. This led to an alternative title, Madonna della Stella, commemorating this unexplained celestial occurrence.
