Saint Nicholas church, Romanesque church in Assenza, Italy
Saint Nicholas church is a Romanesque church building in Assenza with a single nave that narrows toward the rectangular choir, marked by two Gothic arches from the 1400s. Inside, exposed roof trusses in the nave give way to a double cross vault with Gothic sails above the choir section.
The original structure was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and later expanded eastward and westward during the 1400s. These expansions introduced the Gothic arches that still define the interior today.
The walls inside display frescoes from the late 13th century and 1322, showing how religious art evolved across different periods.
The building sits on Piazza San Nicolo in Assenza and can be accessed through a Romanesque side entrance. A small cemetery next to the northern wall helps with finding the entrance.
A hidden crypt lies beneath the choir and is often overlooked by visitors, yet it provides insight into the building's earliest construction phases. This underground space shows how the church developed gradually over centuries.
