Castello di Monteserico

Castello di Monteserico, Medieval castle in Genzano di Lucania, Italy.

Castello di Monteserico is a stone fortress set on a hillside in northern Basilicata, displaying medieval military construction with thick defensive walls and lookout towers. The buildings show a mixed architectural style from different periods, reflecting how the place changed and adapted across the centuries.

The fortress emerged during the early medieval period as a response to local defense needs in the region. In 1041 a decisive battle between Norman and Byzantine forces took place here, shifting political control over southern Italy.

The fortress served as a gathering place for the local community across centuries, where residents assembled during significant occasions. Today the preserved rooms still speak to this role as a meeting point for both religious and civic matters.

The site sits on an elevated position, so comfortable footwear matters when you explore the grounds and views. Bring enough time to walk around the walls and enjoy the outlook across the surrounding landscape.

After World War I the fortress became a private residence for Italian film actress Lyda Borelli, connecting it to a chapter of cinema history. Her stay here remains little known, but it marks one of the most unusual moments in the site's modern story.
