Ponte Acquedotto, Medieval bridge in Gravina in Puglia, Italy
Ponte Acquedotto is a bridge in Gravina in Puglia, Italy, that crosses a deep gorge and links two parts of the town. The structure in pale stone displays multiple arches stacked above one another, with the upper ones narrower than the lower, and a closed channel runs along the top.
After earthquake damage in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Orsini family rebuilt the crossing and added a water channel to connect springs from the surrounding area. This transformation turned a simple passage into a combined system for transport and supply.
Residents today walk across as a footpath between neighborhoods, while the old aqueduct system above still shows how water once traveled through the town. Local festivals sometimes take place in the gorge below, where the architecture provides a natural backdrop.
Marked paths from the town center lead to viewpoints where the arches and channel are clearly visible. The gorge below offers additional perspectives if you descend, but the climb down requires sturdy footwear.
Film crews chose the gorge and the crossing as a location for action scenes in a James Bond movie from 2021. Those scenes brought international attention to the town and drew new visitors wanting to see the film locations.
