Monticelli d’Ongina Castle

Monticelli d'Ongina Castle is a fortress with four round towers at each corner and a wide moat surrounding its brick walls. Inside the building are several museums, including an Ethnographic Museum, an Archaeological Museum, and an aquarium located in the basement.

The fortress was built in 1450 as a defended residence for a local noble and served as a stronghold for a wealthy family. In the 16th century it changed hands, marking a transition between different ruling families.

The chapel inside displays ceiling frescoes from the 15th century created by artists from Cremona. These paintings show how wealthy families decorated their spaces for prayer and devotion.

The site is best explored on foot, with the outer walls providing a good starting point for your visit. Visitors should know that the interior spans multiple levels and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Local residents tell stories of a female figure said to appear near the castle walls. These tales are part of the regional folklore and continue to be shared in the community today.
