Fortified city of Peschiera del Garda

Fortified city of Peschiera del Garda is a pentagonal fortress at the mouth of the Mincio River where it enters Lake Garda, featuring five bastions and two gates. The interior ramparts were filled with earth to support heavy artillery placements during the Renaissance period.

The Roman settlement of Ardelica began as a trading post before the Venetian Republic transformed it into a modern fortress during the 15th century. This change made it a key defensive position controlling Lake Garda.

The fortification shows the military power Venice exercised over this region through its distinctive architecture and layout. Visitors walking along the bastions today can see how the design reflects the Republic's control over trade routes and territorial borders.

Visitors can walk through the fortification independently or join guided tours to learn how the five-sided design functioned. The bastions offer open views of the river and lake, making them the best spots to understand the fortress layout.

The fortress was designed with advanced artillery defense techniques that were revolutionary for its time after Venice gained military experience. Many of these engineering solutions were later copied by other European fortifications.
