Peschiera del Garda, Fortified commune in Verona Province, Italy
Peschiera del Garda is a commune in Verona Province on the southern shore of Lake Garda, where the Mincio River flows out of the lake. The town center sits on a small island encircled by water channels and the old fortress walls.
The settlement developed at a strategic position and was expanded into a fortress by the Venetians during the 16th century. In the 19th century it became part of the Austrian defensive system and joined the four fortresses that controlled northern Italy.
The name comes from the Latin word for fishpond and points to the former importance of fishing along the lakeshore. Visitors today walk the waterfront promenade and pass through the old gate arches between shops and cafés.
The train station links the town to larger cities and sits close to the historic center. Ferries depart from the harbor and travel to other towns around Lake Garda.
A small nature reserve with a landlocked lake sits a few kilometers outside the town. In winter many tufted ducks arrive here to spend the season in the protected environment.
