Lago del Frassino, Lake and archaeological site in Peschiera del Garda, Italy.
Lago del Frassino is a small lake near Peschiera del Garda in the Veneto region, nestled among the moraine hills south of Lake Garda. It sits close to the point where the Mincio River begins, and its edges are lined with reeds, trees, and wetland areas.
Beneath the surface of the lake lie the remains of prehistoric pile dwellings, pointing to ancient communities that lived on the water here. These remains are part of a group of sites across the Alps recognized by UNESCO for their prehistoric value.
The shores of the lake draw bird watchers who come to observe species passing through on their way between Africa and Europe. The site is part of a protected nature reserve, and visitors tend to move quietly along the paths to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
The lake is a short walk or bike ride from the center of Peschiera del Garda, making it easy to visit without a car. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for watching wildlife, as many birds stop here during migration.
The lake is one of the few places in Europe where the Lataste's frog still lives, a species that needs very clean and undisturbed water to survive. Its presence here is seen as a sign of how healthy the local ecosystem has remained over time.
