Carrarese Castle, Medieval castle in Este, Italy
Carrarese Castle is a medieval fortress in Este featuring an extensive defensive wall system roughly one kilometer long, reinforced by twelve towers. At its center stands a keep positioned on a hill overlooking the city below.
The fortress was founded around 1056 and experienced multiple cycles of destruction and rebuilding. It took its current form in the 14th century when Ubertino da Carrara reconstructed and reinforced the structure.
The castle grounds now house the National Atestino Museum, displaying Roman and pre-Roman artifacts discovered in the Este region. Visitors walk through spaces that reveal how people lived and traded in this area centuries ago.
The fortress grounds are surrounded by public gardens with mature trees that provide shade and resting spots. You can reach it most easily by taking the train to Este station and then walking uphill to the entrance.
The fortress was built to control commerce on the Bisato Canal, an artificial waterway created in 1139. This channel connected Vicenza to the Adriatic, making Este a crucial hub for goods transported by water.
