San Pellegrino Terme funicular, Mountain funicular in San Pellegrino Terme, Italy
The San Pellegrino Terme funicular connects the village with Vetta station over a track of about 720 meters with a steep gradient reaching 55 degrees. Small carriages carry passengers up and down on a regular schedule throughout the day.
The funicular opened in 1909 and was designed by engineer Villoresi to carry visitors to the thermal baths. After decades of service it closed in 1989, then underwent major restoration work before reopening in 2022.
The funicular once served as the main way to reach the thermal springs and the elegant Grand Hotel at the top. It still represents a link between the busy village below and the refined resort area above.
The ride takes only a few minutes and runs regularly during the season from May to September. Plan to wait a bit during busy periods, especially when other visitors are arriving at the same time.
The original route had five intermediate stations, but today only the top and bottom stations are in use. Visitors can sometimes spot traces of these old stops as they travel along the line.
