Granfonte

Granfonte is a Baroque fountain in Leonforte built with elaborately carved stone featuring multiple water outlets arranged in a symmetrical composition. The structure extends along a considerable length and displays the substantial limestone blocks from which it was constructed.

The fountain was built in 1651 by architect Mariano Smiriglio to supply the growing town with water. Its completion marked a turning point in Leonforte's infrastructure and demonstrated the technical capabilities of the era.

The fountain served as the social center of Leonforte for centuries, where residents gathered daily to collect water and exchange news. Its design reflects how vital water access was to community life in this hilltop town.

The site sits in central Leonforte and is easily accessible on foot. Water still flows from the original outlets and the location is freely accessible throughout the day.

The fountain has four major facades with six water outlets each, operated by a specialized hydraulic system designed centuries ago. This setup was revolutionary for its time and still functions largely in its original configuration today.
