Necropoli Realmese

The Necropoli Realmese is an ancient burial ground near Calascibetta with approximately 300 rock-cut tomb chambers. The graves are carved directly into the stone and show different sizes and shapes.

The burial ground was established around 850 BC and reflects the burial customs of central Sicilian communities from that era. It provides insight into how ancient funeral practices developed in this region across different periods.

The rock-cut chambers show how people in this region created and organized burial spaces for their families. Each tomb tells something about the way of life and beliefs of that era.

The site is located north of Calascibetta and is reachable by car or on foot by following local roads northward. The best visit is during warmer months when the paths are dry and easily accessible.

Many of the tombs show niches and compartments that matched early burial methods, which were different from later Roman techniques. These features help archaeologists trace how burial practices evolved on the island over hundreds of years.
