Lago di Pergusa encompasses 402.5 hectares of protected land, featuring a salt lake surrounded by hills from the Erei Mountains.

Archaeological findings from the lake bottom indicate continuous human settlements in the area since Neolithic times, with oldest artifacts dating to the Copper Age.

Ancient writers including Ovid, Cicero, and Claudian referenced the lake in their texts, connecting it to the myth of Persephone's abduction.

The reserve contains bird watching stations, educational facilities, and walking paths that allow visitors to observe the natural environment throughout the year.

The lake waters periodically turn red due to Arctodiaptomus salinus crustaceans that develop red pigmentation as protection from sunlight.
